Set Up
Bday is an intelligent program. At a minimum, you need only
supply it a single command line arguement. It will derive
the rest of its configuration defaults directly from the Gap
system files.
It can be placed anywhere on your system, even in a path
statement. The single requirement is, that upon execution, a
copy of GAPBBS.CNF *must* reside in the same directory as the
Bday files.
The easiest configuration would be the placement of the Bday
files directly into your Gap system directory. Bday can also
be easily placed into it's own directory.
Depending upon the options you choose, the particular Bday files
needed would range between the following 2 examples.
Example #1 - Generate predefined output screens, files needed:
BDAY.EXE or BDAY.COM
Example #2 - Generate customized output screens, files needed:
BDAY.EXE or BDAY.COM
BDAYHI
BDAYHIG
BDAYBYE
BDAYBYEG
Note that the 2 examples are a range. You need not supply all of
the files if not desired.
Both the .EXE and .COM versions are supplied. They are the exact
same program, so you can determine which format better suits
your needs.
Usage

following summary help screen will be displayed:

└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
The following is an example and explaination of the different
methods and switches.
BDAY /S[g] - This will allow you to direct the output to the
Standard Output device. Generally this will be your
screen. Redirection is certainly possible but not
needed.
Graphics output can be generated by appending a G to
this switch. (ie. BDAY /SG)
BDAY /Nx (where x = 0 to 9) - This command sequence will
create the appropriate NEWSx and NEWSGx files. Use
a 0 when you wish to create the NEWS or NEWSG file.
If there are no birthdays for the current day, then
the news files will not be created, and the old NEWSx,
NEWSGx will be deleted.
If you specify and incorrect or to large of a
parameter for x then Bday will display the help
summary screen.
BDAY /Bx (where x = 0 to max_bulletins) - This switch will
allow you specify that you wish to generate
Bday output as a bulletin. Simply replace xx
with the approprate number. Both the BLTx and
BLTGx bulletins will be created. Bday will not
write to a bulletin which is out of range.
The /B option (unlike the /N option) will generate the
output files even if there are no birthdays for the
current day (an appropriate message will be used
instead).
BDAY /F:filename - Bday also allows you to specify a dos
path/filename. For example if you wished for the
Bday output to be directed to a file called
HAPPYB, then specify it on the command line. The
HAPPYBG file will also be automatically created.
You can specify a full path if so desired. (ie.
POSTCALL /F:D:\FORUMS\FM1\MESSAGE.TXT). Bday is
smart enough to write it and the coresponding
D:\FORUMS\FM1\MESSAGEG.TXT file.
The color parameter is a number between 1 and 6, passed on the
command line after the switches.
BDAY <switches> [color number]
The following is a listing of the colors and the respective
parameter number:
1 Red
2 Green
3 Yellow
4 Blue
5 Magenta
6 Cyan
│
This is an optional item and need not be included. Bday will
default to Cyan.
Optional Files
You can customize Bday by providing your own optional header and
trailer files.
If present the BDAYHI or BDAYHIG will replace the predefined
title header. This file will be shown right before the current
birthdays of the day.
If present the BDAYBYE or BDAYBYEG will be shown immedately
after the current birthdays of the day list.
Bday will look for these files in the default directory and if
not found, will use it's own internal screen displays.
Exit Code
Bday will issue an exit code of 1 upon error. An exit code
of 0 signifies a successful exectution.
These are provided for use with batch files. Access can be
accomplished via the dos errorlevel variable.
